NEWS: WEINER TO NFL: HONOR JEWISH HIGH HOLY DAYS
New York City - Representative Anthony Weiner (D - Brooklyn and Queens) today called on the National Football League to honor the holiest days on the Jewish calendar by immediately rearranging the New York Jets' schedule.
In consecutive weeks, the Jets are currently scheduled to play games at 1 PM on September 20th, Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and 4:15 PM on September 27th, hours before the start of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Since the game starts at 4:15 on Sunday evening, it will run into direct conflict with the Jewish community’s religious requirement to be home by sundown. The game on Rosh Hashanah should be moved to another day entirely out of respect for the Jewish community.
Rep. Weiner sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (attached) today and is available in New York City for comment.
Rep. Weiner said, "The easy solution is to move the games and honor the holy days. There's no reason why the largest Jewish community in the country should be punished because of a scheduling snafu."
